Winter wrap-up
As we get into February and pass the yearly traditions of Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day then our annual pilgrimage to North Aurora for Paczki from Harner’s Bakery, I’m spending more and more time in our warehouse beginning to put everything in ship-shape condition for the spring rental season. After a full year of party rentals, some of our items start to look a little less than their best, so this is a great opportunity for me to go through everything we own, pull it down and go over it with a magnifying glass and touch up everything that needs attention.
I’m sad to say that cleaning inventory is actually fun for me (what has my life become?) – it lets me get a good feel for what we have and how it looks. Particularly how it’s going to look for my clients. Because that’s top priority for me. If I’m not happy with the way something looks, I won’t let it go out. In this business there’s a disturbing trend. Once equipment starts to show wear, many event rental companies simply pitch it in the garbage. They figure it’s a cost of doing business. Each item has a ROI and a lifespan. Once it meets each of those targets, it’s disposable. That just doesn’t sit right with me tho. I just don’t feel that throwing literally tons of items into a landfill simply because they aren’t looking their best is responsible. Especially when they can be looking great again with just a little effort. That brings me to my point – particularly about padded resin folding chairs.
Padded Resin Folding Chairs
Padded resin folding chairs are a staple of any rental company. They’re hugely popular with the wedding crowd – popular for ceremonies and receptions. They add a touch of elegance and class to gatherings and are sturdy and comfortable to sit on. One of the reasons we love them in our inventory is that they have a solid white resin body. That means that if they get scratched or dinged, it’s not going to show like a painted chair. They’re the good stuff. The unfortunate thing is that they can get scuffed or dinged – because they are plastic. And after a season of this, they can start looking rough. But for the same reasons we love these chairs, they can also be put back into prime condition with just a little bit of effort. All it takes is some time, desire and a few sanding sponges. What’s the take-away? Saving literally tons of garbage from entering a landfill – where it will sit for hundreds of years.
Now, I’m not one to really tell anyone else what they should be doing. I’m just not that type of person. So I’m going to just say that – as a company – we believe in being responsible. If something can be fixed and saved – we’re going to do that. Because waste isn’t good – for the planet or our bottom line. Having to re-buy inventory every 2 years is bad business. Especially when it’s so easy to re-condition and re-finish it so it’s looking great again. Here’s a short video I did on this;
I wanted to make this video and share it – share this information – because I know you have a choice where to rent items for your wedding or party. I want you to know where we stand, as a company. We hope that when it’s time to make a choice who to work with for your event – that you take pride in selecting a responsible company like Highlight Event Rentals.
